Introduction
Course features: Biotechnology subjects: Students build high-level skills with a series of core subjects that underpin the contemporary biotechnology field. From advanced subjects in microscopy, proteomics and bionanotechnology to the evidence and design of clinical trials and the use of biotechnology to deliver solutions to infectious diseases, students gain advanced discipline expertise that prepares them for senior roles in the field. Professional subjects: Students complete two core subjects common to many UTS postgraduate science degrees (Advanced Communication Skills in Science, Understanding Data and Statistical Design). They can then customise their remaining professional stream credit points with choices in business models and intellectual property, project management principles, risk assessment and management, and more, preparing them to master new ways of working in a diversity of professional environments. Elective subjects: Extensive elective choices give students the opportunity to tailor their studies to meet their professional goals. They can choose from additional science study in areas such as cytogenetics and genomics; build leadership skills with subjects in technology and innovation management and accounting for managerial decisions; or acquire high-level research skills with a biotechnology research internship elective and choices in human and animal research ethics, research proposal writing and more.
Graduates emerge ready for senior careers in lab-based research or in data analysis for health care policy or clinical trials. They are highly sought after by the medical biotech industry, as well as by organisations seeking a combination of advanced science and management expertise. They can work in medical device and biotechnology companies, government policy and regulation roles, and in research organisations where the ability to combine biology and biotechnology to solve medical problems offers significant value.
Career Opportunities
All graduates have training in the professional attributes that employers seek. The skills learnt expand career horizons and enhance prospects for promotion in the rapidly evolving science professions. Graduates may also proceed to a career in research by transferring into the Master of Philosophy in Medical Biotechnology (C04389) as a pathway to a PhD. Graduates are well prepared for careers in medical device and biotechnology companies, government policy and regulation, hospitals, and research organisations where the ability to combine biology and biotechnology to solve medical problems is required.
