Introduction

The University of Pittsburgh Physician Scientist Training Program (PSTP) was established in 2007 to develop leaders in academic medicine. We are interested in fostering an environment where our students learn the skills necessary to become future pioneers in research—taking ownership of their projects and seeking external sources of funding to help facilitate the development of their ideas.

PSTP enriches the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine curriculum with an additional year of basic or translational research training. Upon graduating, PSTP students will have acquired the knowledge, skills, and experience to begin careers in some of the most exciting areas of academic medicine.

In addition to efficiency, the close integration of clinical and basic science training better reflects the future careers of academic physicians. By paralleling other specialty training programs, interested students have the capability of efficiently transferring into other well-established Pittsburgh training programs (e.g., the Medical Scientist Training Program)
