Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine use a unique whole-person approach to help prevent illness and injury. DOs, are fully licensed physicians who practice in all areas of medicine. Emphasizing a whole-person approach to treatment and care, DOs are trained to listen and partner with their patients to help them get healthy and stay well.

DOs receive special training in the musculoskeletal system, your body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles, and bones. By combining this knowledge with the latest advances in medical technology, they offer patients the most comprehensive care available in medicine today. The Pre-Osteopathy program at UNK will prepare you for higher education in the field.

The College of Medicine of the University of Nebraska Medical Center requires a minimum of 90 semester hours for admission. However, students pursuing a pre-medical curriculum are expected to choose a major so that they can be working towards a baccalaureate degree concurrently with the Pre-Osteopathy program. This requires a major/minor combination or a comprehensive major.

Responsibilities of an Osteopathic Physician:

• Assesses a patient’s medical condition by reviewing his or her medical history, listening to the patient’s concerns, and performing a physical examination.
• Look beyond symptoms of illness and disease to examine the whole patient.
• Partner with patients to help prevent illness and injury.
• Use their hands to diagnose illness and injury and increase your body’s natural tendency toward self-healing.
• Advises patients on health and lifestyle issues, such as exercise and sleep habits.
• Refers patients to other medical specialists if needed.
