Introduction
Centre for Stress and Age-Related Disease
The Centre for Stress and Age-Related Disease comprises internationally-recognised researchers working on multidisciplinary projects at the biology-chemistry interface. Our work seeks to understand the role played by stress in the initiation and progression of age-related disease and to improve health and wellbeing in older people.
Our members collaborate locally, nationally and internationally with other academic institutions, charities, hospitals and businesses.
Our work focuses on three main areas of research:
- Chemical Biology
- Cell Biology
- Translational Science

Who we work with
The Centre for Stress and Age-Related Disease has scientific expertise in examining the impact that a range of stressors (psychological, xenobiotic, oxidative and mechanical) have on the initiation and progression of age-related disease, and is the only one of its kind in the UK.
Research takes advantage of the multi- and inter-disciplinary nature of its staff with much of our research being conducted at the biology/chemistry interface, generating novel compounds and ligands, discovering novel drug targets, and investigating the role played by stress in the natural ageing process. A multidisciplinary approach allows us to not only understand the involvement of a range of stressors in disease initiation and progression but also allows us to develop novel ways of diagnosing and preventing disease.
Research stakeholders include clinical, industrial, charitable and academic collaborators and encompass local, national and international links. These links are constantly evolving and expanding with some examples listed below.
Study with Us
The Centre for Stress and Age-Related Disease currently has 23 registered PhD students who work in a multidisciplinary environment allowing them to utilise the centre’s broad expertise to work at the life science interface between the chemical and biological sciences. This generates postgraduates with unique knowledge and practical skills improving future employability.
