The Andalusian Plan for Rare Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the SSPA and Law 16/2003, of May 28, on cohesion and quality of the National Health System, indicates the training of professionals as a fundamental factor in improving health Professional qualification. In this sense, it recognizes the importance of continuous and updated training on rare diseases, aimed at reducing the diagnostic delay, which occurs in many cases, and modifying the natural course of the disease if possible.
More and more physicians belonging to the public or private sectors, being area specialists (in the different disciplines that participate in the care of these patients such as nephrology, pulmonology, rheumatology, family medicine and internal medicine among others) or Well physicians in training (resident intern doctors –MIR-), demand the acquisition of basic and specific competences that are useful for the management of these patients, through academic training oriented and focused on the healthcare field, focusing attention on the clinical knowledge, diagnostic procedure and therapeutic measures.
In addition to this demand by health professionals, there is also an unquestionable social demand, both from the point of view of the patient as an individual and from the point of view of the association of different autoimmune diseases, to improve knowledge, dissemination and the visibility of autoimmune diseases by the scientific community.
The correct multi and interdisciplinary and biopsychosocial approach to each of the autoimmune diseases is not possible without adequate knowledge and specific training on the part of the healthcare professionals who treat them in their day-to-day life.
We consider it especially relevant to improve knowledge in autoimmune diseases due to several reasons:
- Although individually they are not very prevalent diseases, if we unite all those with autoimmune origin, they would affect 5% of the population, with an incidence of the number of new cases per year ranging from 1 to 20 per 100,000 inhabitants
- There are a large number (and of a very diverse nature) of different autoimmune diseases, with a form of expression that can differ enormously and that can constitute a real diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.
- It has a very high health impact on patients, as many of them, in certain situations seriously and irreversibly, affect vital organs such as liver, kidney, brain or heart.
- They represent a very high cost for society due to several factors: a) the number of patients affected in a global way is high, b) the diagnostic process is complex, c) they frequently require multiple consultations and hospital admissions and d) based on Due to the intrinsic characteristics of some of the treatments used, these are of high economic cost.
Therefore, the dissemination of knowledge of AE will allow the early identification and adequate treatment of the increasing number of patients.
