Introduction
A 6-year degree program in Medicine and Surgery, held in English, is run by Humanitas University in partnership with Politecnico di Milano.
Precision medicine, big data, A.I., nanotechnologies, surgical robots, 3D printing, and bio-prosthesis: this degree program will enable a doctor to treat patients through the management of technological developments in medicine and related sectors, including disease prevention and treatment, patient rehabilitation and the development of innovative diagnostic and therapeutic solutions.
The degree program aims to train professionals who will be able to apply medical and technological know-how as a means of providing innovative and quality medicine. In a global context of increasing complexity, technological innovation makes it possible to improve the quality of life in a sustainable way, innovating care and humanizing the doctor-patient relationship.
The six-year year degree program in Medicine and Surgery taught in English, is organized by Humanitas University in partnership with Politecnico di Milano. The program strongly focusses on enhancing the medical skills of a doctor through the integration and acquisition of the basic competencies and approaches relevant to Biomedical Engineering.
The integrated six-year training program will allow you to obtain additional ECTS and be awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, in addition to an MD in Medicine.
The degree program will provide:
- a biomedical engineering approach to basic science disciplines (e.g. chemistry, physics, statistics, computer science).
- the acquisition of competences to deal with precision medicine and regenerative medicine.
- competencies to address complex issues concerning the applications of technology and information analytics to medicine through the integration of pre-clinical and clinical education with basic engineering subjects (such as mathematical analysis, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanics, etc.).
- a multi-disciplinary approach by introducing basic biomedical engineering methodologies and technologies into medical training to foster integration between the two disciplines.
- an innovative approach to doctor-patient interaction that maximizes the potential of technologies and intelligent systems for the optimization of machine-patient interaction and for the customization of therapies and continuity of care.
On successfully completing the degree program you will:
- have gained in-depth knowledge of advanced medical technologies and be able to design personalized therapies through the use of complex technological systems for clinical evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment.
- be able to optimize therapeutic outcomes based on the potential of data analytics and machine learning techniques, the use of new materials and advanced therapeutic devices such as surgical robots, endo-prostheses, bio-printers, and 3D printing.
- have opportunities to work in numerous medical fields, e.g. biomedical device design, biomedical technologies or in pharmaceutical industries.
The course is based on the didactic approach of Humanitas University and Politecnico di Milano adopt an educational approach that promote interactive methodologies.
Classes aim to encourage student engagement and interaction, with a strong focus on group work through data collection, data management and follow-up discussions with the teaching staff, as in the case of the flipped classroom approach.

The Course

Organization and Assessment
Years 1-3 | Include opportunities for practical experience, internships, specialized laboratories and the acquisition of soft skills, the key to the development of doctor-patient relationships. |
Semester I | The course will be held at Politecnico di Milano. |
Semester II | The course will be held at Humanitas University to facilitate student integration between the fields of Medicine and Engineering. |
Years 4-6 | The degree program will include both single-subject and integrated course modules where teaching staff from Humanitas University and Politecnico di Milano will be co-present in the classroom to ensure the full integration of engineering skills in clinical training. The same approach of co-tutoring will be further adopted during a number of medical professionalizing activities. The clinical component will always play a central role thanks to the close connection with Humanitas hospital. |
Semesters I & II | The courses will be held at Humanitas University (the courses are mainly dedicated to clinical training, professionalizing activities and use of the Simulation Center “Mario Luzzato” and other Humanitas hospitals). |
ECTS
On completing your studies in Medicine with a total of 360 ECTS, if you have also acquired the 30 additional ECTS during the six-year degree program, you will be able to apply to Politecnico di Milano for the issuance of the three-year degree award in Biomedical Engineering.
Thesis
In order to complete your degree, you will be required to write a degree thesis, supervised by professors from the two Universities. The thesis will involve the development of a project, based on the application of the acquired multidisciplinary skills.

Humanitas University is the highest new entry in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023.
Humanitas University has entered the Times Higher Education (THE) International Ranking for the first time, ranking among the top 250 universities in the world out of 1799 universities analysed, and placing itself as the best new entry.

This confirms Humanitas University’s results in international rankings, as already highlighted by the Leiden CWTS and U-Multirank for 2022: the University, in fact, was ranked first in the EU for the percentage of scientific publications in the top 10% worldwide by the Leiden CWTS Ranking and eighth in Europe for its degree course in Medicine by U-Multirank.

Program Outcome
The Course provides:
- A higher level of in-depth study of the basic subjects that are already part of the training of the physician (chemistry, physics, statistics, computer science), typical of the preparation of a biomedical engineer.
- A greater attention to the acquisition of the necessary skills to deal with issues related to precision medicine and regenerative medicine.
- The integration of pre-clinical and clinical preparation with related teachings (such as mathematical analysis, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanics, etc..) useful to build a solid basic engineering training giving future graduates of the course skills that make them able to address complex issues in the field of applications of technology and information analysis to medicine.
- The inclusion in the educational path of methodologies and technologies typical of biomedical engineering in order to facilitate a cross-fertilisation between medical training and basic engineering training.
- An innovative approach to doctor-patient interaction that allows to make the most of the potential offered by technologies and intelligent systems for the optimization of machine-patient interaction and for the customization of therapies and continuity of care.
