Specific abilities
- To know the biomedical sciences that Dentistry is based on to ensure correct dental assistance. Among these sciences, suitable content should be included concerning:
- Embryology, anatomy, histology, and physiology of the human body.
- Genetics, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology.
- Microbiology and immunology.
- To know the morphology and function of the stomatognathic apparatus, including suitable specific content of embryology, anatomy, histology, and physiology.
- To know the scientific method and have the critical ability to assess the established knowledge and new information.
- To know the necessary scientific principles of sterilization, disinfection, and antisepsis in order to prevent cross-contamination in the dental practice.
- To know the danger of ionizing radiation and its effects on biological tissues, together with the legislation that regulates its use. To handle oral radiology facilities.
- To carry out the necessary radiographs in dental practice, interpreting the obtained images and knowing other diagnosis techniques that are relevant to the image.
- To know the normality and the oral pathology, as well as the evaluation of semiology data.
- To identify the main reason for consultation and the history of the current illness. To carry out a general clinical history of the patient and a clinical record that accurately reflects the patient’s records.
- To know the behavior and communication sciences that facilitate dental practice.
- To handle, distinguish and select the appropriate dental materials and instruments.
- To know the dental biomaterials: their manipulation, properties, indications, allergies, biocompatibility, toxicity, elimination of waste, and environmental impact.
- To know the National Health System as well as the basic aspects of sanitary legislation, clinical management, and appropriate usage of the sanitary resources, understanding the importance of the dentist’s role in the field of Primary Health Care.
- To know and use the basic equipment and instruments for the dental practice.
- To apply the principles of ergonomics in dental work, as much at an individual level as in a work team when it is suitable, as well as in the principles of preventing work risks associated with the dental practice.

- To educate and motivate the patients in a way that prevents oral illnesses, check the pathogenic oral habits, instruct them on correct oral hygiene, on dietary and nutritional measures, and, ultimately, about all the methods for maintaining oral health.
- To know the effects of tobacco on oral health and to participate in the measures that help the patient who wants to quit smoking. Equally, to know the complex interactions between the environmental, social, and behavioral factors of oral and general health.
- To know the procedures aiming to conduct the diagnosis of oral health in the community and to know how to interpret the results.
- To know the repercussions of the demographic and epidemiological trends in dental practice.
- To know the organization and the provision of oral health care in the community, as much at a private level as public, as well as the general health care and the dentist’s role in said areas.
- To elaborate and implement oral health programs and to know the inter-institutional and inter-professional coordination necessary for its implementation.
- To know the ethical legislative and administrative standards which regulate the dental profession and applying them in the management and the clinical practice, as well as knowing the organization, abilities, and functions of the professional corporations. To complete every type of medical-legal documents and records.
- To know the dentist’s role within the health professions and to work with other health professionals and other members of the dental team.
- To recognize that the patient is the center of attention and that all the interactions, including diagnosis, scheduling, and implementation of the treatment and maintenance, must be in their best interest, avoiding any type of discrimination and respecting confidentiality.
- To identify the signs and attitudes which suggest the possible existence of mistreatment.
- To know the general processes of getting ill, curing, and repairing, among those including infection, inflammation, hemorrhage and clotting, healing, traumas, and alterations of the immune system, degeneration, neoplasm, metabolic alterations, and genetic disorders.
- To know the general pathological characteristics of illnesses and problems which affect the organic systems.
- To know the oral manifestations of systematic illnesses.
- To know the general and clinical pharmacology in the dental practice.
- To know the pharmacological bases of the different anesthetic skills, as much local as general, as well as the role of sedation and general anesthesia in the handling of the dental patient.
- To know and manage the more frequent urgent medical emergencies in the dental practice and in the techniques of basic cardiorespiratory resuscitation.
- To have appropriate knowledge of human nutrition, in particular, the relationship between nutritional habits and the diet with the maintenance of health and the prevention of oral illnesses.
- To carry out basic oral disease treatments on patients of all ages. The therapeutic procedures will have to be based on the concept of minimal invasion and on a global and integrated focus on oral treatment.
- To diagnose, plan and carry out, with general nature, multidisciplinary, sequential, and integrated treatment of limited complexity on patients of all ages and conditions and on patients with special requirements (diabetic, hypertensive, oncological, transplant, immunosuppressed, anticoagulated, among others) or who are handicapped. Specifically, the dentist must be competent in the establishment of a diagnosis, of a prognosis, and the development of a suitable therapeutic plan and in a particular way of orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, bruxism, and other parafunctional habits; dental and periapical; oral traumas; periodontal pathology and pathology of the peri-implanted tissues; bone pathology of the jaw, the oral soft tissues and attached glands; states of partial or total restoration and in the planning of their rehabilitation treatment through dental and mucosa support prostheses, or through dental implants, dental misalignment and/or malocclusion and other anatomical or operational alterations of the face of the stomatognathic system and of its possible orthodontic, orthopedic or surgical corrections.
- For the establishment of the diagnosis and treatment plan, the dentist must acquire the following abilities:
- To take and interpret radiographs and other procedures based on the image, relevant in the dental practice.
- To make diagnostic models, put them together and take inter-occlusal records.
- To determine and identify the aesthetical requirements of the patient and the possibilities of satisfying their concerns.
- To identify the patient who requires special care, recognizing their characteristics.
- To assess the motor and sensory function of the mouth, the jaw, and the attached areas.
- To carry out limited procedures of soft tissue invasive diagnosis techniques (biopsies).
- For the establishment of suitable treatment, the dentist must be competent in:
- The correct prescription of medication, knowing their contraindications, interactions, systemic effects, and repercussions on other organs.
- Applying skills of local-regional anesthesia.
- Preparing and isolating the operating area.
- Identifying, assessing, and assisting medical emergencies and urgencies that can occur during the clinical practice and applying cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, handling acute infections, including the pharmacological prescription and the simple surgical aspects.
- Identifying and assisting any dental urgency.
- Carrying out treatments, both medical and surgical, for common illnesses of the oral soft tissues.
- Carrying out simple surgical procedures: extraction of erupted permanent and temporary teeth; fractured or trapped roots, and the uncomplicated surgical extraction of non-erupted teeth and simple procedures of pre-prosthetic surgery.
- Treating dental-alveolar traumas in temporary and permanent dentition.
- Treating as much pharmacological as surgical inflammatory processes of the periodontal and/or peri-implanted tissues including the above and below gum periodontal instrumentation techniques.
- Assessing and treating the patient with cavities or other non-carious dental diseases, and being capable of using all the designated materials to restore the form, function, and aesthetics of the tooth in patients of all ages.
- Designing, preparing the teeth, prescribing, registering, carrying out clinical tests, and putting into service indirect restorations: inlays, veneers or porcelain laminate veneers, and single crowns.
- Operationally treating the destructive processes and dental-alveolar traumatic injuries.
- Carrying out endodontic treatments and applying procedures to preserve the pulp vitality.
- Carrying out conventional aesthetic procedures from a multidisciplinary perspective.
- Treating the edentulism, both partial and total, including the biological design (specific design characteristics) dental preparation, obtaining records, clinical tests, and adaptation to the patients of partial and complete removable prostheses, simple dental-supported bridges and simple prostheses on implants, removable and fixed, including their positioning and putting into operation.
- Elaborating the prescriptions of the custom-built “dental prostheses” health products and “apparatuses of dental-facial orthodontics and orthopedics".
- Carrying out non-surgical treatment of temporomandibular disorders and oral-facial pain.
- Carrying out the oral treatment of a child patient and recognizing their characteristics.
- Identifying and correcting oral habits susceptible to causing or exacerbating malocclusions.
- Planning and determining the specific design characteristics, records, prescription, clinical tests, clinical positioning, and adjusting for putting the fixed and removable space maintainers and orthodontic techniques as well as removable assets designed to replace teeth or correct crossbites.
- Pre-professional practices, in the form of rotatory clinical odontology and with a final competency evaluation, allows the incorporation of professional values, assistance communication abilities, clinical reasoning, clinical management, and critical judgment. They will have to include clinical work of the student with patients of all ages and conditions, in an integrated way and under appropriate supervision.

Dentistry (Grado en Odontología) will give you the opportunity to work not only as a general dental practitioner in private clinics, hospitals, and community dental services but also as an orthodontist, cosmetic dentist, and periodontist or oral surgeon.
Furthermore, with your knowledge of Spanish as a graduate in dentistry, you would be able to go work in other countries where Spanish is widely spoken such as the USA or Latin America.
