Introduction
After ensuring your own safety upon arriving on the scene, the first priority is a patient’s airway. If a victim cannot exchange air, all resuscitation efforts are useless.
Aggressive and prompt airway management on the part of the rescuer is of paramount importance. Oxygen (O2) is a medication and, if properly used, is an excellent tool in combating shock. Annual re-certification with CPR is required to maintain current standards.
A four-hour programme designed to accompany a Healthcare Provider – Basic Rescuer – Level ‘C’ CPR course, this programme includes the following:
- Airway anatomy
- Airway obstruction
- Use of suction devices
- Oxygen tank maintenance
- Use of Oropharyngeal Airways (OPA)
- Use of Nasopharyngeal Airways (NPA)
- Oxygen flow rates and delivery systems
- Oxygen tank safety precautions & troubleshooting
- Practical training on mannequins, and specialized Airway trainers
