Introduction
Founded on the belief that undergraduate liberal arts education can play an essential role in meeting the world’s health challenges, the Global Health Studies program draws upon Allegheny’s longstanding commitments to project-based and interdisciplinary learning, civic engagement, diverse perspectives, and internationalization.
Hands-on experiences
Hands-on experiences are essential to students of global health. Students are encouraged to take part in a variety of different professional and experiential opportunities:
- Off-campus studies such as domestic or international semesters or summer away
- Volunteer opportunities through local agencies and international organizations such as RAM (Remote Area Medical), and CFHI (Child-Family Health International)
- Research experiences such as summer or semester student/faculty research, nationally competitive REUs (Research Experiences for Undergraduates), and research positions at partner universities, agencies, and companies

Global Health Studies Learning Outcomes
- An understanding of disease causation and prevention
- Awareness of the transnational dimensions of health and disease
- Comprehension of the relationship between health and the built and natural environments
- An ethical outlook that promotes sensitivity to the culture of local communities
- Firsthand knowledge of real-life global health work
- An appreciation of the political, historical, social, behavioral, scientific, and cultural aspects of health in the search for sustainable solutions
