Program Description

Periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that studies hard and soft tissues supporting teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them.

The clinical periodontology studies the diagnosis, the prognosis, and the treatment of all kinds of inflammatory pathology affecting the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.

The aim of this Master program is to improve the knowledge of clinical periodontology in dentists who want to study in deep this subject performing diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment according to the evidence base dentistry and the clinical experience of tutors.

The Master is qualified as science due to its tecnica and scientific characteristics

The Master main partner is the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano.

The teaching proposal of the UniCamillus Master in addition to the legal qualification is divided into the following classes:

  • Science: courses characterized by a purely technical and scientific approach
  • Plus: courses characterized by a multidisciplinary approach also containing elements and managerial and non-medical-surgical subjects
  • Experience: the courses mentioned above with high and particular experiential activities of internships and internships in specialized structures

Location:

  • Lectures will be held at the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano.
  • The practical Hands-on and the internship will be held at the Istituto Stomatologico Toscano.

Final Certification and Formative Credits: all candidates who have completed the planned training and pass the final exam will receive a second level Master’s Degree in Clinical Periodontology with the assignment of 60 credits (CFU).

Duration: the Master’s program lasts 12 months and includes a total time of 1.500 hours, divided into:

  • Practical activity and lectures and seminars
  • Internship (750 hours)
  • Study and individual preparation activities including the preparation of the final exam

Attendance mode: attendance is mandatory for at least 75% of the total hours of the Master.

For frontal lectures and seminars (unless otherwise communication) a commitment of 4 sessions of approximately 5 days is foreseen for the entire duration of the Master. The total hours of training will be scheduled in accordance with the host structure. A minimum number of 10 students is requested in order to start the Master. Below the threshold of 10, UniCamillus can unilaterally decide not to activate the Master (participants will receive the already paid participant fees back). The maximum number of available seats is 30.

Methodology and educational program

Theoretical and practical sessions will be integrated by practical sessions on artificial and animal models. The following materials will be given to students by CD:

  • Surgical scheme
  • Periodontal chart for the dental office
  • Video of live-surgery
  • Each student could bring to the dental clinic 2 their patients to perform oral surgery as the first operator lead by the professor/tutor

The clinical surgery session would be performed during the course according to the calendar of practical lessons.

The calendar of the lessons could be modified and adjusted, with adequate notice, due to the national and international scientific calendar.

The Master’s program includes the following teaching modules:

Module 1 (3 CFU)

  • Anatomy, physiology, and physiopathology of the supporting tissues around teeth and clinical implications
  • Etiopathogenesis and pathological anatomy of periodontal disease
  • Semeiotics and diagnosis of periodontal disease

Module (2 CFU)

  • Periodontal disease and systemic conditions: a bidirectional relationship
  • Periodontal disease no-plaque associated

Module 3 (2 CFU)

  • Evolution of microbiology: from Koch to Microbiome
  • Infection and colonization of dental roots
    • Mechanical treatment to control the dental root’s infection
    • Chemotherapy treatment strategies to control dental root infection
  • Guidelines for Surgical and Non-Surgical treatment strategies for the management of periodontal disease

Module 4 (2 CFU)

  • Non-surgical periodontal treatment NSPT
    • Modifications of the NSPT protocol and initial preparation
    • The soft tissue response

Module 5 (2 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT basic strategies
    • Instruments
    • Flap and Surgical techniques
    • Management of interdental papilla and soft tissue aesthetic
    • Healing of surgical flap and defects
    • Stitches and suture techniques in periodontal surgery

Module 6 ( 2 CFU)

  • Surgical periodontal treatment NSPT
    • Causal therapy and reduction of the gingival pocket

Admission and selection criteria

One of the following degree titles are required to be admitted to the Professional Master Program (or near graduation by the Master enrollment deadline):

  • Master’s degree in Medicine and Surgery
  • Master’s degree and/or specialist degree in dentistry and dental prosthesis
  • Master’s degree and/or specialist degree in medicine and surgery with specialization in odontostomatology or qualification for the practice of dentistry

Other candidates who can also apply:

  • Candidates in possession of an Academic Degree equivalent to those listed above obtained in a foreign University.
  • Candidates in possession of an Academic Degree obtained abroad and equivalent in duration and content to those listed above.

The University reserves the right to admit candidates with different qualifications but relevant to the Master’s course.

Procedures and terms for application

The application must be received, signed and written on plain paper, as well as written clearly and legibly, using the form available on the web site, by 01/02/2021:

The following documents must be attached to the application:

  • A dated and signed curriculum vitae et studiorum European format;
  • Photocopy of an identity card;
  • Any other academic titles that the candidate wishes to submit for the admission;
  • Statement of having read the information regarding the personal data treatment based on art.13 and 14 in accordance with the European legislation (UE) 2016/679;
  • Photocopy of fiscal code or health insurance card (for Italian citizens and foreigners in possession of it);
  • For candidates in possession of equivalent qualifications to those required: substitutive declaration of certification, pursuant to art. 46 of D.P.R.28/12/2000,n. 445, certifying the achievement of the aforementioned titles in accordance with current legislation;
  • Candidates in possession of an academic title obtained in a foreign country will have to present the “Declaration of studies abroad” using the form available on the web site.  Within 2 months from the beginning of the Professional Master Course, the candidates will have to provide to the student secretariat the original of the Official Italian translation of the Full Qualifications of Legalization and of the Declaration of Value issued by the Italian Embassy or General Italian Consulate competent for the territory in the country in which the title was produced;
  • Payment copy of the participation fee of the first installment: Euro 2500 by 01/02/2021.

University Tuition fees

The Master costs € 11.000 to be payed in 4 equal amount installments:

1. installment with the application: 2.500,- EUR by 01/02/2021

2. installment: 2.500,- EUR by 01/04/2021

3. installment: 3.000,- EUR by 01/09/2021

4. installment: 3.000,- EUR by 01/12/2021
